Do you regularly feel REALLY peaceful? Are you continuously overflowing with joy and a positive mindset on a daily basis, so much so that you seem free of problems and emotional pain? If so, skip this article and go directly to the comment section and share your secret with me!
If you’re still reading this, you are amongst the vast majority of us who are striving for a more peaceful and joyful existence. We probably think this problem is unique to our day and age, but it is not. It is unique to anyone with a mind that has just got out of control thinking.
If you observe your problems, you will notice that most problems are rooted in the mind. The basic premise is the same: some external event happens; we choose to see only one side of the story, and then interpret the situation in a way that causes some form of mental conflict; resulting in some form of emotional suffering.
Most of what we perceive happens through who we are and that is made up of a complex mixture of events: our childhood, our values, our hurt and rejection, our accomplishments and the list could go on.
Once we have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, we are new creatures in Christ, but our minds are still UN-renewed and so the process begins toward wholeness or maturity or Christlikeness.
Just try something. Close your eyes for about 5 minutes, and during this time, try to keep your mind silent with no thoughts running around in there. You may do it for a few seconds but then you are pulled away from the silence by thoughts.
Your mind becomes cluttered with useless information, with thoughts that are not conducive to our well-being, or peace but filled with garbage. Because your mind is cluttered, you are unable to operate in wisdom and it becomes distant and foggy. Essentially, we lose touch with the importance of our mind being controlled and thinking on the right things, which causes us to operate wisely, and peacefully.
Proverbs 23:7 AMP ” For as he thinks in his heart, so is he….”
You’re thinking produces what you become. If your mind is cluttered and thinking on rubbish, if it is uncontrolled and undisciplined, that is what it will produce.
You see what you think on is a choice. The more you discipline yourself to think on things that are conducive to peace the more peace you will walk in. The more peace you walk in, the wiser you can operate your life.
Phil 4:8-9 AMP “ 8 For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]. 9 Practice what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of peace (of [e]untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you.”
Now no one can tell me that is not the way they would like to live.
The distractions that we’ve declared as urgent and important: watching TV, updating our Facebook and MySpace and twitter pages, Instagram, checking emails, gossiping on the phone, loading mp3s on our music players, etc. all pull at us. They all pull at our attention, distracting us away from the things that are truly important to us – things that will bring lasting happiness and fulfillment to our lives and the lives of others we have yet to come to know.
Whether we recognize it or not, this information that we expose ourselves to fills our minds on some level, and affects our emotions and desires, because your emotions and desires are produce from what you are thinking about.
Go on, let’s just admit that often when on social media, you come away frustrated, upset and even really angry, as your see the nonsense, the lies, the deception and the misrepresentation of some people.
And if we are not careful, we can easily rush through life, while spending our precious time on this planet focused on that which does not matter – and then wonder why an I so frustrated with where my life is going? Now, social media can be a great tool to connect with people and even minister to them or just share the joys and moments of your life, but the danger comes in when it becomes undisciplined or too much time is being spent online rather than in meaningful face-to-face relationships.
Why do I feel unsettled and easily irritated? Why do I feel unfulfilled and incomplete? You are possibly keeping your mind on the wrong things for too long.
If you are here, breathing and reading this right now, then you have been blessed with this day, to wake up! Wake up and take control of your destiny, starting with what you focus on and allow into your life (regardless of your age).
2 Corinthians 10:5 [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),
Here the bible tells us how to discipline our minds, firstly, it’s a decision and secondly we make a deliberate effort to keep our minds focused on Christ’s obedience (not others) and all He accomplished on the cross on our behalf, making us co-heirs of the promises of God, as well as giving us authority over any opposing thought, demonic force, or situation we may find ourselves in.
You see your destiny, your future; your happiness is not in the hands of other people. It is in your hands. It is made up of choices you make that affect the decisions you take, which ultimately dictate to the direction you decide to go in with regards to things in your life.
One way to clean out the clutter in our minds is by guarding the entrance of our mind: our ears and eyes. We need to be conscious of what we allow inside, starting with our own words, thoughts and attention.
Proverbs 4:23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.
Do you see that? As your guard what goes IN, you have control over what comes OUT in your life issues.
We may not be aware of this, but we spend so much energy on gossiping, bad mouthing other people, judging other people, finding faults in others, and being consumed in negative thoughts like jealousy, guilt or fear, and making excuses to cover up how we actually feel. I know all this sounds really bad and exaggerated when it’s all laid out like this, but if we want change we need to be brutally truthful with ourselves, our thoughts and our words. We will notice that at some point of everyday, however subtly or unconsciously, we are doing several of these things.
I’m not pointing fingers, I can only speak from my own experience and confirm that this is true.
Sometimes, the “violation” is subtle, like passing a negative judgment on a waiter at a restaurant, or becoming frustrated with a telephone customer service person and wanting to call him a bad name, or making a little lie of an excuse instead of saying no.
It’s not that by having these thoughts or saying these words we become bad people. It’s just that these things become useless junk that clutters our minds and does not contribute to our peace, well-being, happiness and ultimately our life as a whole.
I often say this “Stop talking about your problem and start speaking to the problem” or “Stop talking about the person and speak to them”
You see if you are looking for solutions in your life, you need to have the character and courage to confront what is an obstruction and frustrating you from realizing your goals and destiny. Your mind, whether controlled or uncontrolled, controls the outcome. So the quicker we learn to discipline our minds the quicker we will begin to realize our dreams.
Another very important part of this process is to return to the daily discipline of prayer and spending time in the word and worship. Prayer releases your inner frustrations to God who is moved with the pain of your weaknesses. Spending time in the word helps realign your perception because often a wrong perception is as deadly as a deliberate wrong thought. In essence that is what it is. In worship, as you lift Jesus higher, and you magnify Him, He becomes bigger than the situation you face, your stress level go done and you are infused with strength to carry on even in the face of severe opposition.
Some things in our Christian life, like prayer; the word; worship and controlling our minds and thinking, just cannot be short-changed, overlooked, or crowded out. Without these in proper priority we simple make our own lives more difficult than they ought to be. There is just one word for that: “Foolish” (or a high level of ignorance).
His grace is sufficient for you. However, you cannot break all the rules or principles of life He has set in place and expect to walk in the fullness of what your heart desires: peace, happiness, fulfillment, health, success and so on.
Even you health and prosperity is affected by how you think and what goes on in your mind. 3 John 1:2 (AMP) Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers.
As your soul (mind, intellect & emotions) keep well and prosper (that can only be done if you control your mind to stay on things that produce life), your health and prosperity will follow suit.
I pray that by God’s grace you will grasp the importance of this article and make choices and decision based on it that will move you into the direction of far greater glory.
